The Impact of Poor Health on Education: New Evidence Using Genetic Markers∗
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines the influence of health conditions on academic performance during adolescence. To account for the endogeneity of health outcomes and their interactions with risky behaviors we exploit natural variation within a set of genetic markers across individuals. We present strong evidence that these genetic markers serve as valid instruments with good statistical properties for ADHD, depression and obesity. They help to reveal a new dynamism from poor health to lower academic achievement with substantial heterogeneity in their impacts across genders. Our investigation further exposes the considerable challenges in identifying health impacts due to the prevalence of comorbid health conditions and endogenous health behaviors with clear implications for the health economics literature. ∗We are grateful to seminar participants at the 2005 NBER Summer Institute, 2006 Society of Labor Economics Annual Meeting, 2006 American Society of Health Economists Meeting, 2006 Canadian Economics Association meeting, 3rd Economics and Human Biology Conference, 2006 TARGET Conference at University of British Columbia, University of Toronto, University of Illinois Chicago, Fudan University, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and BU/Harvard/MIT Health Economics seminar for helpful comments and suggestions. متن کاملImpact of Group Clinical Supervision on Patient Education Process: A Comprehensive Assessment of Patients, Staff, and Organization Dimensions
Background: The most important barriers to patient education are nurses’ poor motivation and training, and poor quality of managerial supervision. Clinical supervision could be a powerful tool for overcoming these barriers. However, the associated patient, staff, and organization-related outcomes still require further research. Aim: The present study aimed to evaluate the patient-, staff-, and ...
متن کاملGenetic lotteries within families.
Drawing on findings from the biomedical literature, this paper introduces the idea that specific exogenously inherited differences in the genetic code between full biological siblings can be used to test within-family estimators and potentially improve our understanding of economic relationships. These points are illustrated with an application to identify the causal impact of several poor heal...
متن کاملInvestigation of Genetic Diversity and Structure Analysis of Different Citrus Genotypes Using ISSR Markers
In breeding programs, it is necessary having knowledge of the relatedness and genetic diversity in germplasm pools. The spread of cultivated regions and the high levels of production indicates citrus importance in the global economy. Therefore, 110 citrus genotypes were evaluated using 12 ISSR markers. Overall, 154 polymorphic bands were scored with an average of 12.8 alleles per primer. The po...
متن کاملO-26: Effects of Recombinant-LH Supplementation on The Proteomic Profile of Follicular Fluid from Poor Responder Patients: Focus on Follicular Growth Factors and Oocyte Maturity Markers
Background Poor and fragmentary data was available regarding the effects of recombinant-LH (r-LH) in in-vitro granulosa and theca cells of human origin. No data was available from in vivo studies regarding the effects of r-LH supplementation on SCF,EGF,ERK-1/2 and AKT-1 pathways in the follicular fluid of older-poor-responder women undergoing IVF cycle. Evidence from in-vitro and animal studies...
